Meserani sits 25 kilometres west of Arusha on the Dodoma road, and it has been there since 1993. It is part reptile park, part Maasai cultural museum, part free clinic for the surrounding community — the last of which is funded partly by your entrance fee, and is the reason the place has the standing it does locally.
The snakes: This is a serious collection, not a roadside attraction. Black mamba, green mamba, puff adder, boomslang, spitting cobra, python — most of the snakes you might theoretically meet in East Africa, behind glass, with a handler who will explain exactly how dangerous each one is and, more usefully, how rarely any of them want anything to do with you. There are crocodiles and monitor lizards in the enclosures outside.
The guides here are excellent and they answer the real question honestly: the odds of a snakebite on safari are very low, and the odds of dying from one lower still, because the park runs an anti-venom service for the region.
Handling is possible with the non-venomous species if you want it. Nobody will push you.
The Maasai museum: This is the part visitors underrate. It is curated by Maasai staff and covers the actual structure of Maasai life — the age-set system that governs a man’s progression from child to warrior to elder, the role of cattle in marriage and status, traditional medicine, weapons, and beadwork colour meaning. There is a reconstructed boma you can enter.
You can ask difficult questions here — about circumcision, about land pressure, about what tourism has done to Maasai communities — and get straight answers rather than performance.
Camel rides are available for a small extra fee, and are popular with children.
Duration: Two to three hours on site. It works well as a half day, or combined with something else on the western side of Arusha, or as a stop on the way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, which is how many people fit it in.
Who this suits: families, anybody nervous about snakes who would rather understand them than imagine them, and anybody heading west who wants a genuine stop rather than a curio stall.
