Udzungwa is not a game-drive park. There are no roads through it; everything is on foot. What it offers instead is one of the richest concentrations of biodiversity in Africa, part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain so distinctive it is often called the Galapagos of Africa.
The park holds roughly 2,500 plant species, more than 400 birds and six primate species. Two are endemic: the Iringa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey, of which only around 1,200 survive, in two isolated forest fragments.
The signature walk is the Sanje Waterfall trail, climbing through forest to a 170-metre falls with a plunge pool at the base. Longer routes run to the Mwanihana peak over several days. The miombo foothills below the escarpment hold greater kudu and sable antelope.
