Wasini is a small coral island off Shimoni on Kenya’s far south coast, close to the Tanzanian border, reached by a short boat crossing. There are no cars on the island and life still runs largely on fishing and, increasingly, on the day-trip boats that pass through.
Most visits are built around the adjoining Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, one of Kenya’s oldest marine protected areas, where boat trips look for pods of resident dolphins and snorkelling over coral gardens is generally excellent given the park’s protected status. A walk through Wasini village and a Swahili seafood lunch, often grilled or served in coconut sauce, typically rounds out the day.
