Funzi Island sits in a mangrove-lined creek on Kenya’s south coast, reached only by boat from the mainland. There are no vehicles on the island, and the pace of a visit is set by the tide as much as by the itinerary.
The main draw is the sandbank that emerges offshore at low tide – a stretch of pale sand surrounded by shallow turquoise water, used for a picnic lunch or simply for standing in the middle of the ocean. Mangrove creek trips by traditional dhow and guided “crab safaris” through the mangroves and mudflats are the other standard activities, alongside a walk through the small fishing village itself.
