Miwaleni Waterfall & Lake Ride

Cycle to a papyrus lake most visitors never hear about

Budget€48
Luxury€175

Per person, land only. Park fees included where noted.

Mto wa Mbu is flat, which makes it the best cycling town on the northern circuit. Miwaleni is the ride worth doing.

The route: out through the banana plantations and rice paddies on dirt tracks, past the irrigation channels, with the Rift escarpment wall on your left the whole way. Three to five hours depending on how often you stop, and you will stop — people talk to you here in a way they do not when you are behind glass.

Miwaleni itself is a spring-fed lake and waterfall, both fringed with papyrus standing well above head height. The water comes up cold and clear out of the ground, the same aquifer logic as Chemka on the other side of the region. It is quiet. Most safari vehicles drive past the turning without knowing it exists.

You can swim. Bring something to swim in.

What to expect: flat, easy riding on unsealed surface. Hard-packed and fast in the dry months, slower and muddier after rain. We provide the bike and a helmet; tell us your height when you book.

Can be walked instead of cycled if you would rather — it is longer on foot but the same route.
